Sebastian’s First Byline

Sebastian submitting his college application in 2021.

Sebastian spent the entire summer before his bridge year in high school working on his college essay. To start, I asked him to make some bullet points jotting down his strongest memories in order to brainstorm for a topic. Sebastian had a truly wonderful high school experience, so I was excited to see what he came up with and I wondered what I might learn about my son.

Writing doesn’t always come easily for Sebastian, but to my surprise he came up with a topic rather quickly. Unsurprisingly, it had to do with one of the few difficult situations he had to manage in high school during his freshman year.

I’d like to give a massive thank you to NJ Common Ground for sharing Sebastian’s essay. I was proud of him when he wrote it. More importantly, I was proud of his personal growth.

Congratulations, Sebastian!

Enjoy his piece here!

  1. Great description of a difficult happening ; your explanation was very fine ! How well you dealt with the awful way you were treated.
How wonderful your hope is to help others through occurrences as this.

  2. So I’m not crying at all reading Sebastians essay. This young man is so inspirational and not just to others who have Autism, but for those who might not understand what Autism is or what it takes to have or love or live with someone who does have it,May it be mild or severe there are many different levels of Autism and its different for everyone. I’m so proud of Sebastian for his perseverance and how he stands up and is heard and seen for the person he is and not what people should think he should be. I’m proud of my cousin Joanne Sebastians mom for the way she has always supported him to be where he is today and where he is going. Watch out world this young man is going to do things with his life and help others on the way. Congratulations Sebastian for writing one if the most honest and best essays I have ever read.

  3. I don’t know how this bright light escaped me, but perhaps its luminescence dazzled my senses. Now that the elusive email has been discovered, I’m so pleased to know that Sebastian may well be about to find his niche or calling with the comfort of time to hone his skills and explore his fields of interest without being compromised by time. If his calling turns out to be writing in all its many avenues of expression, it would be fair to say the apple hasn’t fallen far from the tree.
