Many of you know that I’ve been working on a memoir for years. Today, I’m honored to have an essay up on The Rumpus that speaks to the heart and soul of the memoir. Please take a look at Death, Doorways, and Dance and feel free to share.

Thank you.

  1. OMG Joanne. I am breathless. Your craft is beautiful, the story you tell, even more so. I am in awe.

“Somewhere between irony and divine intervention lies the truth about why I deserted my life as a professional modern dancer, returned to school for a master’s in special education, and then had a son more handicapped than any child I’d ever taught.”

  2. Dear Joanne, It’s just beautiful! I am so moved by this magnificent essay. The art that goes with it is perfect. I know exactly what you mean about stopping as you are about to enter his room each morning, unsure of what you may find. I spent seven long Years doing that with our son. I hope you find a publisher. It deserves to be read by many people who will appreciate your honesty and superb writing.
